Job Description

Job Summary: The Laboratory Accessioner plays a crucial role in a laboratory setting by accurately receiving, labeling, and documenting specimens for testing. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and excellent organizational skills to ensure the integrity of laboratory processes. 

Key Responsibilities:  

• Receive incoming specimens from various sources and verify accompanying documentation. 
• Label specimens accurately with unique identifiers and enter relevant information into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). 
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of specimens according to established protocols. 
• Prepare specimens for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, or other pre-analytical processes as required. 
• Communicate with healthcare providers, couriers, and other laboratory staff to resolve any discrepancies or issues with specimen collection. 
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the accessioning area to comply with laboratory safety standards. 
• Monitor inventory of supplies and request replenishment as needed. 
• Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities to uphold laboratory standards. 
• Assist in data entry, result reporting, and other administrative tasks as assigned. 
• Follow all HIPAA and other regulatory guidelines to protect patient confidentiality and privacy. 

Qualifications:  

• High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is a plus. 
• Previous experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in specimen handling and accessioning. 
• Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory procedures. 
• Proficiency in using LIMS and other laboratory software. 
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately under pressure. 
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 
• Knowledge of safety and infection control practices in a laboratory setting. 
• Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and adapt to changing priorities. 

Working Conditions: The Laboratory Accessioner typically works in a clinical laboratory environment, which may involve exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, and automated laboratory equipment. The position may require standing for extended periods and occasional lifting of moderate-weight objects. Working hours may vary based on the needs of the laboratory, including weekends and holidays in some settings.
